NSW Merit Team – Australian All Schools
By coming top-2 in two of his events, Andres has been selected in the NSW Merit Team for the Australian All Schools Championships in the 90m hurdles and 100m sprint. Unfortunately, the 2021 Australian All Schools Championships has already been cancelled.
Nationals Qualifiers
Andres’s performance at All Schools has seen him qualify to represent NSW in the Australian National Athletics Championships in March/April 2022:
- 200m hurdles – ran a qualifying time
- 200m sprint – qualifies automatically by coming top 3 at All Schools
- 100m sprint – qualifies automatically by coming top 3 at All Schools
- 100m hurdles (84cm) – qualifies automatically by coming top 3 at All Schools in the 90m hurdles
Boys 14yo 200m hurdles 76.2cm x 10 flight
Andres ran up an age group in the 14yo 200m hurdles – this event is not offered for 13yo athletes, much to the consternation of his hurdles coach! This is the first time he has ever run a 10 flight 200m hurdles – Little Athletics run 5 flight 200m hurdles.
He ran a good heat, finishing 3rd and qualifying 3rd fastest for the final. He was disappointed not to medal in the final but did run faster than the heat, coming 4th with Billy Blair breaking the meet record to take the win.
Both times were well under the Nationals qualifying time – so he can be part of the team to represent NSW in the 200m hurdles at the National Athletics Championships next March/April.
1st | Billy Blair | St Joseph’s College | 26.27 |
2nd | Ethan Williams | Singleton High | 27.73 |

4th | Andres Hampel | Chatswood High | 28.48 |
Boys 13yo 200m sprint
Andres ran a huge PB to finish 2nd in his heat and qualify 3rd fastest for the final. He ran a great final to finish a very close 3rd, only 0.01 seconds off the Silver medal – into a brutal 3.7m/s head wind.
Coming top-3 at All Schools automatically qualifies him to represent NSW in the 200m at the National Championships next year in March/April.

Boys 13yo 100m sprint
Andres was dominant in his heat – winning easily with a new PB and qualifying 2nd fastest for the final. In the final, he ran brilliantly to snatch 2nd place on the line in a photo finish and only 0.05 seconds from the win.
Coming top-3 at All Schools automatically qualifies him to represent NSW in the 100m at the National Championships next year in March/April.
